- Return of the Car Boot
We are pleased to announce that following the success of our Car Boot sales in 2023 that they are returning for 2024! All car boots will be held within Dereham Station Car Park (NR19 1DF) and that our station café/tearoom will open throughout serving hot & cold drink and food. We can confirm that car boots will be hosted at Dereham Station on every third Tuesday of the month starting in March and finishing in October. This falls to the following dates: Tuesday 19th March Tuesday 16th April Tuesday 21st May Tuesday 18th June Tuesday 16th July Tuesday 20th August Tuesday 17th September Tuesday 15th October The car boot will be open from 10am to 1pm for the general public. Driver Experiences We are proud to announce that our much loved Diesel Driver Experiences are now back for 2024. Our diesel driver experiences allow you to take control of one of our resident diesel locomotives from Dereham to Wymondham and back totaling in 22 miles of driving! We offer the following experiences: The Light Engine (Joint) - Half Day - £350 per person This experience will give you the opportunity to appreciate the two main roles on a diesel locomotive during a return trip from Dereham to Wymondham Abbey. You will interchange between being a secondman and driving, spending 11 miles doing each. Throughout the whole experience you will be learning about the locomotive and the railway, all whilst under the supervision of our fully competent crew. The Light Engine (Joint) is offered over a number of days across the year. We are able to accommodate 2 people per session. Your experience will start off at Dereham Station, where we ask you to arrive no later than 30 minutes before your booked slot. You will be offered a complimentary drink & slice of cake from our Tea Room whilst you receive your safety talk from our crew. After the experience you will be presented with a certificate showing the locomotive that you have driven and signed by the driver instructor. Please note: We cannot accept any guests on this experience due to the amount of people allowed in a cab at any one time. The Light Engine (Solo) - Half Day - £630 (+ £15 for a companion*) This experience will give you the opportunity to drive a return trip from Dereham to Wymondham Abbey. Your experience will start with an inspection and starting of the locomotive. From there you will drive a total of 22 miles on a round trip from Dereham to Wymondham Abbey and back. Throughout the whole experience you will be learning about the locomotive and the railway, all whilst under the supervision of our fully competent crew. The Light Engine (Solo) is offered over a number of days across the year. We are only able to accommodate 1 person per session. Your experience will start off at Dereham Station, where we ask you to arrive no later than 30 minutes before your booked slot. You will be offered a complimentary drink & slice of cake from our Tea Room whilst you receive your safety talk from our crew. After the experience you will be presented with a certificate showing the locomotive that you have driven and signed by the driver instructor. Participants may bring up to one guest to observer (they will be able to ride in the cab with you). Guests are charged at £15. ‘Well-being’ Information: There is no upper age limit for Driver Experience, but participants should be able to climb a short set of steps to get into the cab of the locomotive and their eyesight (with glasses if usually worn) should be up to the required standard to drive a car. Furthermore, please ensure that appropriate footwear, steel toe capped boots, and clothing is worn during the experience. Driver Experiences - Terms & Conditions *Please note that whilst every effort is made to the advertised traction & services we do reserve the right to amend, alter or cancel service, The Mid-Norfolk Railway does not accept any responsibility for any inconvenience caused. The Mid-Norfolk Railway are unable to offer any cancellations, refunds or reschedules to any orders, therefore please ensure you can attend the date/time you select before you make payment and book. Wymondham Abbey Station 1/10 Built in 1999 by The Mid-Norfolk Railway Opened to passengers in May 1999 Named after Wymondham Abbey Won "Outstanding" in Wymondham in Bloom two years running (2022 & 2023) Wymondham Abbey Station is the southern terminus of the MNR. Station facilities include a booking office, waiting room, toilets, outdoor seating area, second handbooks on offer, run round viewing area and the award-winning gardens. A great place to visit or start your journey on East Anglia’s longest heritage railway. Wymondham town guides are available from the booking office and our Wymondham Abbey booking office staff have great knowledge of the area also. What's nearby and in Wymondham Wymondham Abbey - only a short walk from the station and just over the River Tiffey. The Abbey dates back to 1107 and became independent in 1449. Wymondham Abbey is a Grade 1 listed building and is full of history. Alongside with the Abbey there is a cafe and tours of the towers are given on select dates. Wymondham Town Centre - a short walk away from the station past the Abbey and has many points of interes. From the 1617 dated market cross (now where the Wymondham Tourist Information Centre is located) in the town centre, which is also a Grade 1 listed building to the Heritage Museum in the former police station, law court and jail house built in 1787. Wymondham Town Centre also plays host to the weekly Market on a Friday, and the third Saturday of the month hosts a farmers’ market. Wymondham has many buildings of interest including the Abbey, Green Gragon pub and Cavick House (a couple mins walk away from the station) and the town with its farmhouse, egg vending machine and cafe to name a few. Wymondham is also home to two nature reserves called The Lizard and Tolls Meadow. After the historic town the mainline railway station can be found up to 25 mins walk away (or 20 mins avoiding the town) with hourly trains to Norwich and Cambridge (connections to London from Norwich and Cambridge) 7 days a week.
