BR Mark 1 Carriages Rolling Stock Mk 1 BSO(T) 9010 (A Dunford) Mk 1 FK 13225 (A Dunford) Mk1 BFK 14023 (C Clark) Mk 1 BSO(T) 9010 (A Dunford) 1/6 Builders Derby, Doncaster, Eastleigh, Swindon, Wolverton & York Introduction Date 1951 - 1963 Body Type Steel In Service 1951 - Present British Railways Mark 1 Carriage Upon the nationalisation of the railways in 1948 British Railways (BR) decided that due to the previous "Big Four" companies (GWR, LNER, Southern & LMS) all having had their own unqiue designs in carriage building, that they would incorporate the best features from each of the former companies into a standard carraige design, which then in turn gave birth to the design of the British Railways Mark 1 carriage. The main aspect of this new design was that it was much stronger, therefore in the event of an accident the passengers would have greater protection. The design however, did not just get used for locomotive hauled passenger carrying vehicles, it was incorporated into multiple unit stock and a variety of goods vehicles. Due to the design of these carraiges they could easily either be construced into First or Second Class vehicles. During the privatisation in the 1990s the remaining Mark 1 locomotive hauled vehicles were withdrawn due to them having be progressively replaced by the newer Mark 2 and Mark 3 stock over the 1970s & 1980s. In the present day they can still be seen on the mainline with touring companies but they are mainly found on heritage railways due to the simplistic design and easy maintenance. Mark 1 Carriages at the MNR At present there are 11 Mark 1 carriages on site, with the MNR owning 7 of these. Throught the last 4 years, starting in 2020, 5 out of the 7 MNR owned Mark 1 carriages have had various work, repaints and overhauls which have been completed inside Dereham Traction & Rolling Stock Restoration & Maintenance Shed. The shed was built with the support of the EU Leader Funding Rural Development Programme (Project Ref. 109532). They quickly became on of the mainstays of the BR fleet and quickly earnt their reputation has powerful and reliable class of locomotive. After the privatisation of the railways many freight & charter companies bought Class 37s from BR which help in turn help to contribute to the Class 37's becoming one of the longest surviving classes to date and to be one out of only two classes of locomotive to have never official fully withdrawn from mainline working. Out of the 309 built 102 are still active today, with 35 being preserved across Britain's Heritage Railways and 67 still being used by mainline operating companies. 37003 37003 was released from Vulcan Foundry Works on 28th February 1960, originally as D6703, and allocated to Stratford (30A). The design of the 4MT was done by Robert Riddles at Brighton Works during the course of 1951, who were then over the next 5 years responsible for building 130 of the 155 of the class, the other 25 being split between Derby and Doncaster Works. During the 1960s Modernisation Plan of British Railways, which called for all Steam traction to be replaced by Diesel, the class started withdrawal in July 1961 and the last 9 remaining engines being withdrawn on 9th July 1967. 80078 80078 was released from Brighton Work on 2nd February 1954 and allocated to Plaistow (33A) in East London. Over the course of its working life it was transferred between various depots such as Tilbury, Stratford, Shewsbury & Croes Newydd where is was withdrawn in 1965. It first arrived on hire to the MNR in 2018 and was then subsequently rehired for the 2019 running season. As of 2021 the MNR officially became it's home base with it being used by the railway for the main steam running season every years since. The locomotive does occasionally go to other heritage railways during the winter. The MNR would like to take this opportunity to thank the owners for the hire of 80078 to the MNR and for their continued help ensuring the MNR can operate steam trains.
